Cabin Baggage on the Aircraft

handgepaeck-check-masse

As a rule, your cabin baggage for a flight will consist of one small item that may be taken on-board the aircraft. There are also mandatory security regulations for cabin baggage. We have summarised these for you here. The following information is not necessarily complete. No liability for inaccurate or incomplete information will be accepted. Further information is also available before departure from your airline.

Permitted cabin baggage dimensions

The maximum dimensions for your cabin baggage depend on the airline. Many airlines follow the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recommended dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20 cm. Many cabin baggage suitcases available in stores also comply with these dimensions. Be sure to check the correct dimensions and maximum permissible weight for cabin baggage with your airline in advance.

What is permitted in cabin baggage?

If you wish to take liquids with you on board the aircraft, pack them in containers (max. 100 ml per container) before travelling to the airport, and place the containers in one of the prescribed transparent plastic bags with a maximum size of 20 cm x 20 cm. The resealable bags, with a maximum capacity of one liter, are available in most supermarkets and drug stores (e.g as freezer bags). Alterantively, you can buy reusable transparent bags at our Hamburg Welcome Center in the Airport Plaza from 6:30 am to 11:00 pm. Only one bag is permissible per person.

The same conditions apply, for example, to deodorant sprays, but these must not contain a gas propellant. Beyond this, each passenger is permitted one gas or disposable cigarette lighter or one box of matches, to be carried on the person. Lighters and matches must not be stowed in cabin baggage.

If you have to regularly take medicine and will require it during the flight, please check the applicable regulations with the airline in advance. Tablets are normally not a problem in cabin baggage. Creams, ointments, and drops are often treated as liquids; injections may also be taken on board, subject to specific requirements. Please carry a prescription or medical certificate with you and present it at the security checkpoint without being asked to do so.

Different rules apply to razors, depending on the airline. Small disposable razors or dry electric shavers are often acceptable. Safety razors are in some cases subject to stricter rules. Loose razor blades and straight razors, however, are never permitted.

Sharp implements above a certain size must not be taken on board the aircraft. Small pocket knives with a blade length of up to 6 cm, however, are permitted. The same applies to nail scissors.

Travel value and duty free products are subject to multiple security checks before sale. All products purchase within the security controlled area of an airport may be carried in cabin baggage in the aircraft cabin without restriction. This includes products such as perfume, cosmetics and spirits.

In order to extend the security zone all the way into the aircraft, purchases made at the travel value and duty free shops will be handed over to passengers in sealed bags. The sales receipt must be kept within the bags.

Cabin baggage for travel to the USA

As of 30 June 2018, passengers flying direct to the USA from Europe may only carry a maximum of 350 millilitres of powder or powder-like substances in their cabin baggage. Substances such as medication and baby food are exempt from this rule. Please check with your airline in advance, and, where possible, transport any powder in your checked baggage. This rule also applies when you are flying to the USA from Hamburg via another European airport where you change planes. Please take the new rule into account when packing for your flight from Hamburg.
