Starting now, passengers can reserve a timeslot for access to the security checkpoint/ Easter holidays: around 270,000 passengers departing and arriving per week anticipated

05.04.2023

Right on time for the start of the Easter holidays, the day of departure from Hamburg Airport can be planned even more effectively thanks to the new Slot & Fly service. Within the 72 hours immediately before departure, passengers can book a 15-minute timeslot to use a separate entry to the security checkpoint. The service is available, regardless of airline, free of charge on the airport website. And if you also use self-service, you can save even more time during the holiday period. Around 270,000 passengers are expected to arrive or depart every week during the Easter holidays.

“I am thrilled that we can offer all passengers this ideal addition to our self-service products, Slot & Fly, in time for the Easter holidays. If you check in online, use a bag-drop kiosk for your luggage, and book a timeslot for the security checkpoint, you will get to the gate more quickly, even during the holidays. Slot & Fly is an important building block in our extensive catalogue of measures to provide passengers with a good start to their holidays.” says Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport.

“Slot & Fly opens up the possibility for passengers to avoid lengthy queues to reach the aviation security checkpoint, without compromising security. This allows passengers to more reliably plan how long they will spend at Hamburg Airport, reducing the stress of their journey. At the same time, ‘Slot & Fly’ allows us to more efficiently coordinate personnel requirements for the aviation security checkpoint, reducing waiting times as a whole,” says Michael Schuol, President of the Hannover Federal Police Department.

Slot & Fly: faster access to the security checkpoint

Now, anyone flying from Hamburg Airport can reserve a 15-minute timeslot for the security checkpoint. Reservations can be made between 72 hours and 1 hour prior to departure. This service is free of charge and available to all passengers, regardless of airline and ticket class. The key advantage is that only registered passengers may use the special Slot & Fly entry to the security checkpoint in Terminal 1, and only within their reserved 15-minute timeslot, which makes for better and more reliable planning of the day.

Using the online booking portal passengers can reserve a slot for themselves and up to four other passengers, quickly and easily.

Book a slot online – and use it – in just five steps:

  1. First, enter the travel details and the number of passengers.
  2. The passenger can then choose a suitable 15-minute slot from all available timeslots.
  3. To make the reservation, enter the complete family and given names of all passengers, exactly as they are printed on the boarding passes.
  4. The passenger making the booking will receive a confirmation email with a QR code for each passenger.
  5. On the day of departure: As the timeslot is directly linked with the boarding pass, passengers only need to scan their ticket at the Slot & Fly entry, just as they would at the normal checkpoint. Alternatively, they may enter by scanning the QR code from the confirmation email.

Easter holidays 2023: demand remains stable

Since the launch of the new summer timetable at the end of March, significantly more passengers are using Hamburg Airport again, and demand remains stable for the Easter holidays. Each week, around 270,000 passengers are expected to depart and arrive. Up to 1,000 take-offs and 1,000 landings are scheduled per week. With up to 40,000 passengers arriving and departing on peak days, new measures such as Slot & Fly make more reliable planning possible. All passengers are advised to be at the airport around 2 hours prior to departure, and to prepare well by following Hamburg Airport’s 5 Travel Tips, along with the Tips of the Federal Police for the Security Checkpoint. Many northern Germans are drawn to the south, where mild temperatures allow them to already enjoy the spring. Mallorca is of course the leading destination, but other regions of Spain, Greece and Türkiye are now popular.

Summer preparations: from technology to additional personnel

The new Slot & Fly lane is just one of many building blocks being put in place to give passengers the best possible start to their holidays in the coming travel season. Better planning for the security checkpoint is also ensured by displaying current waiting times on the airport website. As well as this, the airport is contributing its own staff to support its partners during the summer, wherever this is legall possible – from the terminals to baggage handling.
