Flying safely from Hamburg Airport

We have prepared as well as possible for travel during the corona pandemic. We want you to be able to travel safely. On this page we want to answer your questions and provide an overview of the measures we are taking.

Entry: Test requirements and quarantine in Hamburg

  • NEW: Since 30 January 2021, further entry restrictions apply to risk areas with virus variants.
  • Corona-Tests are mandatory (max. 48 h before or directly after entry).
  • Persons who enter the Federal Republic of Germany and who have spent time in a risk area, at any time within the ten days prior to entering Germany, are in principle required to enter in quarantine for a period of ten days after their arrival, and to contact the local health office and inform the latter of their entry into the country. This is done via the digital entry registration at  www.einreiseanmeldung.de.
  • The quarantine period can be shortened if the person undergoes a test for the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 on the fifth day after entry at the earliest and the test result is negative. The local health office must be informed

How safe is travelling from Hamburg Airport at present?

Hamburg Airport has taken numerous measures to make it possible for its passengers to travel in safety. You can find more information about this under “Measures at Hamburg Airport”.

At the airport, like in all public spaces, it is important to continue with the recommended safety measures: all passengers are required to wear medical face masks (surgical- or FFP2-face mask), maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 m from other people, wash your hands regularly and thoroughly, and observe coughing and sneezing etiquette. If you feel unwell, postpone your travel — for your own safety and for the safety of other people.

How safe is it to travel by plane?

The airlines have adopted a series of measures to reduce the intensity of contact between cabin personnel and passengers.

Examples include:

  • all airlines require face masks to be worn to further reduce the risk of infection. Please find out in advance about the requirements of your airline and bring your own mask with you.
  • Reduction of service level by means of eliminating complex procedures
  • Temporary suspension of in-flight sales, beverage services and refresher towelettes
  • Slowing of the deboarding process to make it easier to maintain distance

Please contact the airline directly in case you need further information on the measures on the plane. Contact: https://www.hamburg-airport.de/en/plan-book/destinations-airlines

Is it possible to do a Corona test at Hamburg Airport?

The test center of Centogene is offering fee-based tests for everyone. Here you can find more information.

Are passengers and visitors required to wear a medical face mask at Hamburg Airport?

It is obligatory to wear medical face masks (surgical- or FFP2-face mask) in all terminal buildings at Hamburg Airport. Please bring a medical face mask to the airport and put it on before entering the terminals.

It is also obligatory to wear medical face masks in all shops at Hamburg Airport, in public transport and on board of airlines. Please mind the regulations of your airline.

Children under the age of seven and persons who are unable to wear a mouth and nose cover due to a health impairment or disability are exempted from this regulation. The obligation to wear a medical mask applies from 14 years of age.

Is it possible to buy a medical face mask at the airport?

At our self service machines near the security checkpoint and in the waiting area near the departure gates, you can contactlessly buy medical face masks as well as hygiene wipes and sprays for your travel.

Where can I wash or disinfect my hands?

There are numerous bathrooms at Hamburg Airport, in both the public and security-controlled areas. Signs will point you in the direction of the nearest bathroom facility wherever you are. Disinfectant dispensers are located in all bathrooms. Additionally, further disinfectant dispensers were set up in the terminals and on the pier.

Are there special procedures at the security checkpoint to avoid physical contact as far as possible?

At the security checkpoint, markings on the floor make it easier for you to ensure you maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters from other people. Due to the current developments associated with Covid-19, the EU Commission has permitted member states to make temporary adjustments to inspection procedures in the field of aviation security.

For you, this means that you do not need to remove medical face masks and gloves for the security checkpoint. If you are wearing a medical face mask, you will need to remove it briefly or push it down to reveal your face to verify your identity. Various substitute measures make it possible to largely avoid manual re-checking and the associated direct physical contact. Therefore, you are required to remove all objects from your pockets. You are also required to take off your watch, belt and shoes.

Please note that currently only one item of cabin baggage per passenger may be taken through the security checkpoint. It is allowed to take small handbags, notebook bags etc. in addition to one piece of cabin baggage (e.g. trolley).

Why does Hamburg Airport recommend the use of the „Corona-Warn-App“?

Hamburg Airport and the airlines have already taken many measures in order to protect passengers and guests at the airport. Additionally, we recommend the download and use of the official „Corona-Warn-App“ by the Federal Government. The app will inform you, in case you have had contact with an infected app user. This way, you can react quickly in order to protect yourself and others.

Measures at Hamburg Airport

Please keep in mind that all passengers are required to wear medical face masks (surgical- or FFP2-face mask) at Hamburg Airport. Exceptions are explained in our FAQ below. If you did not bring your own medical face mask, you can buy medical face masks contactlessly at our self service machines near the security checkpoint and in the waiting area near the departure gates. At the self service machines, you can also buy hygiene wipes and sprays for your travel.

To ensure that eveybody is able to travel safely, it is important that you abide by the regulations and take care of yourself and others. With a Mobile Service Team present in the terminals and the pier, we offer our passengers futher support and information.

Wherever queues may form (e.g. check-in counters, security checkpoint), markings on the floor make it easier for you to ensure you maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters from other people.

Individual seats on the waiting area benches in the terminals and at the gates have been blocked to ensure sufficient distance when you are seated

Hand disinfectant dispensers have been provided in all bathrooms, in the terminals and on the pier. They are regularly refilled.

There are regular announcements in German and English in the terminals to inform you about recommended hygiene measures. The information provided is also shown on the monitors and mobile display boards in the terminals.

Bus transport to aircraft is currently being avoided at Hamburg Airport. Passengers primarily use jetbridges to board an aircraft, or enter the aircraft directly from the building on foot. Should a bus journey between terminal and aircraft nevertheless be necessary, the maximum number of passengers has been reduced to ensure sufficient distance can be maintained

Floor markings at the security checkpoint also show the required safety distances. Please note that currently only one item of cabin baggage per passenger may be taken through the security checkpoint. Direct physical contact between personnel and passengers is kept to a minimum.

We recommend the download and use of the official „Corona-Warn-App“ by the Federal Government to our passengers and guests at Hamburg Airport. The app will inform you, in case you have had contact with an infected app user. This way, you can react quickly in order to protect yourself and others.
