Frequently asked questions

How safe is travelling from Hamburg Airport at present?

Hamburg Airport has taken numerous measures to make it possible for its passengers to travel in safety. You can find more information about this under “Measures at Hamburg Airport”.

At the airport, like in all public spaces, it is important to continue with the recommended safety measures: Maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 m from other people, wash your hands regularly and thoroughly, and observe coughing and sneezing etiquette. If you feel unwell, postpone your travel — for your own sake and for the sake of other people.

How safe is it to travel by plane?

The airlines have adopted a series of measures to reduce the intensity of contact between cabin personnel and passengers.

Examples include:

  • Some airlines require face masks to be worn to further reduce the risk of infection. Please find out in advance about the requirements of your airline and bring your own mask with you.
  • Reduction of service level by means of eliminating complex procedures
  • Temporary suspension of in-flight sales, beverage services and refresher towelettes
  • Slowing of the deboarding process to make it easier to maintain distance

Please contact the airline directly in case you need further information on the measures on the plane. Contact: https://www.hamburg-airport.de/en/timetable_and_airlines.php

Are passengers and visitors required to wear a face mask at Hamburg Airport?

It is obligatory to wear face masks in all terminal buildings at Hamburg Airport. This rule is based on the latest Corona regulation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which is valid from 27th May 2020.

Please bring a face mask to the airport and put it on before entering the terminals.

It is also obligatory to wear face masks in all shops at Hamburg Airport, in public transport and on board of many airlines. Please mind the regulations of your airline.

Children under the age of seven and persons who are unable to wear a mouth and nose cover due to a health impairment or disability are exempted from this regulation.

Is it possible to buy a face mask at the airport?

The Metropolitan Pharmacy (Airport Plaza, Arrivals Level) sells various types of face masks. You can also purchase disinfectant for your journey there (in both cases only while stocks last). Current opening hours for the Metropolitan Pharmacy can be found here: https://hamburg-airport.de/en/health.php

At our self service machines near the security checkpoint and in the waiting area near the departure gates, you can contactlessly buy face masks as well as hygiene wipes and sprays for your travel.

Where can I wash or disinfect my hands?

There are numerous bathrooms at Hamburg Airport, in both the public and security-controlled areas. Signs will point you in the direction of the nearest bathroom facility wherever you are. Disinfectant dispensers are located in all bathrooms. Additionally, further disinfectant dispensers were set up in the terminals and on the pier.

Are there special procedures at the security checkpoint to avoid physical contact as far as possible?

At the security checkpoint, markings on the floor make it easier for you to ensure you maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters from other people. Due to the current developments associated with Covid-19, the EU Commission has permitted member states to make temporary adjustments to inspection procedures in the field of aviation security.

For you, this means that you do not need to remove face masks and gloves for the security checkpoint. If you are wearing a face mask, you will need to remove it briefly or push it down to reveal your face to verify your identity. Various substitute measures make it possible to largely avoid manual re-checking and the associated direct physical contact. Therefore, you are required to remove all objects from your pockets. You are also required to take off your watch, belt and shoes.

Please note that currently only one item of cabin baggage per passenger may be taken through the security checkpoint. It is allowed to take small handbags, notebook bags etc. in addition to one piece of cabin baggage (e.g. trolley).

Whom should I contact if I feel unwell or suspect that another passenger may be ill?

If you feel unwell or if a fellow passenger is showing symptoms of illness (e.g. coughing, fever, shortness of breath), please contact the German Red Cross in Terminal 2 (Departures Level) or Hamburg Airport personnel wherever you are. Where necessary, personnel will then summon the airport medical service or the responsible health authority to clarify the situation.

Why does Hamburg Airport recommend the use of the „Corona-Warn-App“?

Hamburg Airport and the airlines have already taken many measures in order to protect passengers and guests at the airport. Additionally, we recommend the download and use of the official „Corona-Warn-App“ by the Federal Government. The app will inform you, in case you have had contact with an infected app user. This way, you can react quickly in order to protect yourself and others.

What check-in counters are now in operation? Which airline is located in which terminal?

Are there any special regulation at the security checkpoint?

Please note that currently only one item of cabin baggage per passenger may be taken through the security checkpoint. It is allowed to take small handbags, notebook bags etc. in addition to one piece of cabin baggage (e.g. trolley).
