Noise protection hangar
The noise protection hangar at Hamburg Airport

Testing the engines is an important part of Lufthansa Technik AG’s aircraft maintenance and overhauling. These test runs are carried out with varying engine power, depending on requirements, and create a corresponding amount of noise. Until 2001, only a noise protection hangar built in 1963 was available for test runs, in which large jets such as the A300, A330, 340, B747 and others could not be tested for technical reasons. These had to be checked outside in the airport. In order to reduce the resulting noise exposure to a peak level of a maximum of 65 dB(A), a new noise protection hangar was developed and built which has served the large jets, up to Jumbos since it was opened in 2001. The hangar was the first of its kind in the world at the time.
