- Air Freight at Hamburg Airport - New weekly freight service to Dubai with Emirates SkyCargo
On 2 September 2007, a new weekly freight service began between Hamburg and the United Arab Emirates. An Airbus A310-300F in the livery of Emirates SkyCargo flies from Hamburg - Dubai every Sunday at 12pm. The freighter reaches Hamburg Airport from Dubai at 10.30am. The aircraft can carry up to 39 tonnes of freight. To create an air and sea logistics solution, Hamburg Airport has brought a further strong partner on board, in addition to Emirates SkyCargo: S.A.T, the world's largest sea-air carrier. S.A.T. will transport goods from the Asian region, for example from Shanghai, Singapore and Manila, to Dubai by ship. From there, they will be brought to Hamburg by air.
According to Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport, "This new freighter service is an important step in the air cargo concept we have launched to strengthen the greater Hamburg region. We have found two strong partners in S.A.T. and Emirates SkyCargo, with many years of experience in sea and air transportation. Emirates SkyCargo has a worldwide network, and thanks to the direct freighter service this network is now available to exporters and logistics companies in the region. Major north German importers will form the customer base for the Dubai-Hamburg service, organised by S.A.T."
Reinhard Coldewe, Emirates Cargo Manager for Germany, is very satisfied. "We are delighted by the strong performance of our north German customer base. Coming only 17 months after successfully entering the Hamburg market, the additional cargo service will allow us to significantly expand our freight operations in the region."
Hamburg Airport processes approximately 78,000 tonnes of air freight per year. Around 33,000 tonnes of air cargo was flown from Hamburg Airport in July 2006. This represents 28.6 per cent growth over 2005. The first half of 2007 has seen a further 11.8 per cent growth in flown air cargo to 16,200 tonnes. The new freighter service between Hamburg and Dubai will bring with it a further growth in air cargo of approximately 4,000 tonnes per year at Hamburg Airport.
