- 2006 Most Successful Year in Hamburg Airport's History
High growth rates, several new routes, beginning of construction of the Airport Plaza - Hamburg Airport is continually growing. In 2006, the airport recorded above average passenger growth and a very good result. The number of passengers grew by 12 per cent to 11.95 million. A growth rate of this magnitude had not been seen at the airport for 36 years. Turnover grew by 9.7 per cent to 223.1 million euros. The annual result was also very satisfying: at 38.2 million euros, profit grew by 22.4 per cent over the previous year. 2006 saw the deployment of larger and more modern aircraft combined with better load factors. Annual growth in aircraft movements is significantly lower than passenger growth: 168,395 take-offs and landings represented a growth in aircraft movement of only 7.9 per cent. Air freight, too, is on the way up. The air freight transshipment volume at Hamburg Airport grew by 2.7 per cent to 77,173 tons in 2006.
Passenger Growth and Center Management Earnings Guarantee Result
Sales revenues grew by 9.7 per cent to 223.1 million euros in 2006. This growth was largely attributable to the significant increase in passenger volume and the higher earnings generated by Center Management. Center Management incorporates the majority of non-aviation revenue sources. The business unit is responsible for the operation and marketing of retail, food & beverage and advertising space. Strict cost management and an efficient corporate structure also contributed to the positive result. Hamburg Airport’s subsidiaries and holdings also played an important role. Michael Eggenschwiler, Chief Executive Officer of Hamburg Airport: “Hamburg Airport is a modern, customer-oriented service provider. Our new organisational structure and the attractive fee structure place Hamburg in the vanguard of German Airports. We are demonstrating that with dedication, creativity and a focus on the passenger as the centre of our business, non-hub airports can also achieve high growth rates.”
HAM 21 Expansion Programme on the Home Straight
With the construction of the Airport Plaza, the last major milestone in the expansion programme, HAM 21 is on the home straight. The opening is scheduled for the end of 2008. We will celebrate the half-way point on 2 August 2007. The majority of the shops and restaurants in the new Airport Plaza will be located beyond the security checkpoints, which will be fully relocated from the terminals to the Airport Plaza. 2008 will also see Hamburg Airport being linked to the S-Bahn (suburban rail network), and a Radisson Hotel will be opened in front of the terminals in 2009.
Hamburg Airport: an Attractive Mix of Routes and Airlines
In 2006, the well-balanced ratio of low cost airlines to established carriers proved itself once again to be Hamburg Airport’s special strength. Last year, a total of 72 airlines offered direct flights to 122 destinations. Variety was the motto for 2006 in Aviation Marketing. Two long-haul and fourteen short-haul routes from Hamburg were launched in the course of the year. With their new, wide range of affordable flights, Lufthansa and Germanwings made a substantial contribution to Hamburg Airport’s growth. Emirates launched a daily long-haul service to Dubai in March 2006 followed by an additional daily service to New York in October. The new long-haul routes were the primary contributors to the growth in the volume of air cargo being flown from Hamburg Airport.
Outlook for 2007: Hamburg Airport Expects Continuing Growth
Michael Eggenschwiler expects the positive trend to continue in 2007: “Recent years have seen Hamburg Airport take its place amongst Europe's major international airports. This position must be further strengthened. We are expecting a further growth in passenger numbers for 2007. Our aim is to increase passenger volume to over
12 million for the first time. The new long-haul routes raise Hamburg’s profile on the international level, so that the airport is taken into account when planning new routes more than was previously the case. We will develop new markets that guarantee our passengers variety in the route network.” This can already be seen in the current summer timetable: 16 new routes from Hamburg have been added, including Valencia, Rimini and Split. In the first quarter, Hamburg Airport has already achieved 4.3 per cent passenger growth.
Airport Days Hamburg – September 2007
Airport Days Hamburg, to be held on 15 & 16 September 2007, is being organised by Hamburg Airport together with Lufthansa Technik and NDR (northern Germany’s public broadcaster). Germany’s largest aviation and music spectacle will feature more than 100 modern and historical aircraft. In the middle of Hamburg Airport and Lufthansa Technik's aprons, NDR will be presenting artists, readings, panel discussions and children’s entertainment along with radio and television programmes hosted on-site.
