The Fascination of Flight Meets the Magic of NDR
What do flying and music have in common? Both cross borders, both bring people together, and both have fascinated humanity from the very beginning. At Airport Days Hamburg 2007, Hamburg Airport, Lufthansa Technik and Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR, northern Germany’s premier radio and television broadcaster) are bringing the fascination of flight and the magic of NDR together in one experience: a weekend full of fun and entertainment for all visitors young and old. Under the slogan “A City Goes onto the Runway”, a unique festival will be held on the aprons of Hamburg Airport and Lufthansa Technik on 15 and 16 September, 2007.
The patron of Airport Days Hamburg 2007 is Ole von Beust, President of the Senate and First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. “As a significant location for the aviation and media industries, Hamburg is showing a completely different side on this September weekend: not work, but pleasure, is taking first place. I am delighted that Hamburg Airport, Lufthansa Technik AG and NDR are organising Airport Days Hamburg together. This festival is an impressive combination of the competencies of these three large, north German companies: the fascination of flight with the world of experiences of music, entertainment and information.”
At Airport Days Hamburg more than 100 aircraft from a century of aviation history will delight aviation enthusiasts and the whole family, on the ground and in the air, throughout the day. NDR will be presenting artists, readings, discussion panels, children’s activities and radio and television programmes at various stage and activity locations. The daytime programme runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, 15 September, there is something special for music lovers: from 6:00 p.m. NDR will be presenting a row of top acts in a unique airport atmosphere on the main stage.
With “Hamburg Airport Classics”, Hamburg Airport and Lufthansa Technik already attracted tens of thousands of aviation fans to the airport in 1999, 2001 and 2003. In 2003, Hamburg Airport Classics achieved a record 100,000 visitors. With its NDR Festivals, the north German broadcaster regularly delights thousands of people. The new joint function organised by these three strong partners, Hamburg Airport, Lufthansa Technik and Norddeutscher Rundfunk, with the new name “Airport Days Hamburg 2007”, will be Germany’s largest aviation and music event.
The Fascination of Flight…
More than 100 aircraft, both historical and modern, are setting course for Hamburg Airport to take part in an aviation event for the whole family. Impressive Airbus and Boeing jets will meet such oldtimers as the legendary Douglas DC-3 and Junkers Ju-52. The polished metal fuselages and timber-framed cloth wings of airborne oldtimers will grace the apron side by side with aircraft of today.
… Hands-On and Airborne…
Modern Airbus and Boeing aircraft, oldtimers and helicopters will not only be exhibited on the ground. They will also be showing what they can do in the air. As the flying machines zoom above the heads of visitors, the well-known moderators Günther Grabowski and Peter Misch will be providing a running commentary on the airborne activity.
Visitors can even take the controls themselves in a flight simulator and put their skills as hobby pilots to the test. And those who feel like really taking off can join one of the scenic flights or joyrides on offer in helicopters, hot-air balloons and historic and modern airplanes. The scenic flights in the legendary oldtimer, the Junkers Ju 52 “Iron Annie”, are especially popular. Visitors can experience aviation in many different ways at the various exhibits on Hamburg as a centre of aviation: Informative displays, multimedia material and objects such as aircraft jet engines may be seen, heard, touched and admired.
… Including an Aviation Job Fair
The booming aviation industry is continually looking for qualified specialist personnel. It is therefore fitting that a job fair will be held at Airport Days Hamburg 2007. Numerous companies will have their own stands where they inform visitors about the various career paths and opportunities for starting out in the industry. As northern Germany’s largest media corporation, NDR offers a wide range of training and career opportunities, which will also be presented at the job fair. This is an ideal opportunity for students and jobseekers to begin a dialog with one another.
The Magic of NDR with a Colourful Show Programme…
NDR will be accompanying the daytime activities at Airport Days Hamburg on 15 and 16 September, 2007, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with music, information and a variety-filled entertainment programme at a number of stage locations and activity areas. Professional and hobby pilots, for example, will be taking part in expert interviews on the NDR stages to talk about their great passion: flying. Alongside various styles of music there will be discussion panels, readings, special children’s programmes and radio and television broadcasts with their moderators. All in all, a rich programme will be on offer.
… and an Evening Concert
Open air entertainment right on the tarmac: As part of the Airport Days Hamburg, NDR will present a concert in a unique atmosphere on a large stage on the evening of 15 September. Concert tickets will be purchasable online. Further information will be available shortly on the internet at http://www.airport-days.de/.

A Hamburg Airport, Lufthansa Technik and Norddeutscher Rundfunk event. About the Organisers:
Hamburg Airport (http://www.ham.airport.de/) is Germany’s fourth largest airport and the largest international commercial airport in northern Germany. Almost 12 million passengers used Hamburg Airport in 2006, and the numbers are still climbing. In round figures, this means 168,400 take-offs and landings per year. The partially privatised airport is owned by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (51%) and HOCHTIEF Airport GmbH/HOCHTIEF AirPort Capital (49%). Around 70 airlines connect Hamburg non-stop to 120 domestic and international destinations. With four long-haul routes, the airport’s gateway to the world is wide open: Continental Airlines fly non-stop to New York/Newark, Emirates to Dubai and New York/John F. Kennedy, and Air Transat to Toronto. Hamburg Airport is the premier airport when it comes to value-for-money flights in northern Germany. Passengers have more than 100 destinations for less than 100 euros to choose from.
Hamburg Airport is undertaking a large range of construction projects for its passengers’ comfort. At the heart of the expansion programme is the new Terminal 1, which entered operation in 2005. In 2008/2009 other major projects will be completed and opened: the Airport Plaza, a generous shopping and food & beverage mall for passengers; the S-Bahn (suburban rail network) link direct to downtown Hamburg, and the comfortable Radisson Hotel directly opposite the terminals.
Lufthansa Technik (http://www.lufthansa-technik.com/) is the worldwide market leader when it comes to the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of aircraft, aircraft engines and aircraft components. Since the beginning of modern aviation, Lufthansa Technik has been perfecting its system of planned aircraft maintenance and today offers maintenance programmes that are tailor-made to the flight operations of the fleets it manages. With the extensive capacity for repairs provided by its worldwide business network along with a polished system of logistics, Lufthansa Technik continually ensures the reliability and availability levels of its customers’ fleets. Its competency as an internationally authorised maintenance, production and development operation allows Lufthansa Technik to offer integrated complete service packages tailored to its customers’ needs. 12,000 employees at the major German sites of Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin, along with a further 13,000 employees in 27 subsidiaries and partially owned holdings in Europe, Asia and the USA provided services for more than 500 airlines in 2005, generating more than 4 billion euros in revenue.
Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) is northern Germany’s most successful radio and television broadcaster. With a total of eight radio stations and NDR television, including four state/regional stations, NDR offers a wide variety of programmes for various target groups. NDR also owns a 17.5% stake in “Das Erste”, the joint venture of Germany’s nine ARD State Broadcasters. NDR also has a significant stake in the sattelite TV broadcasters ARTE, 3sat, KiKa, Phoenix and ARD Digital. As a charitable public institution, NDR is independent not only from the state, from political parties and social groups, but also from commercial interests. Since 1956 NDR has been the official public broadcaster for the states of Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Mecklenburg-Lower Pomerania became NDR’s fourth state in 1992. With around 3,600 permanent employees and a large number of independent contractors, NDR is an important employer for northern Germany. Along with its head office in Hamburg, NDR also operates state broadcast facilities and studios in the four northern German states. NDR’s foreign correspondents play a significant role in ARD’s correspondent network. ARD-aktuell, the most important joint facility of the broadcasting network, is also based at NDR in Hamburg. With the NDR Symphony Orchestra, the NDR Radio Philharmonic, the NDR Big Band and the NDR Choir, the broadcaster is also internationally recognised for its cultural role.
