- Hamburg Airport reports 12 per cent passenger growth
Hamburg Airport set two new records in 2006: both the overall number of passengers and the passenger growth rate were the highest ever, and Hamburg Airport starts 2006 on a high. From January to December, 2006, 11,954,040 passengers passed through Hamburg Airport. That represents 12.0 per cent, or 1.28 million, more passengers than in 2005. “Growth of the magnitude seen last year is unique in Hamburg Airport's 95-year history. By working together closely with the airlines, building on established trust, we have ensured that 2006 will go down as an especially successful year in the history of Hamburg Airport," says Michael Eggenschwiler, the airport’s CEO.
Passenger numbers broke the 11 million barrier at Hamburg Airport for the first time in 2006, falling just short of 12 million. The key factor contributing to this growth – alongside the large number of new routes – is the deployment of larger aircraft combined with the achievement of better load factors. Annual growth in aircraft movements is significantly lower than passenger growth: a total of 168,389 take-offs and landings represents only 7.9 per cent more than in the previous year.
On average, 32,750 passengers passed through Hamburg Airport per day, with a daily average of 230 take-offs and landings. Air cargo, too, is growing: the airport achieved approximately 3.2 per cent growth to 77,600 tonnes in 2006. The total cargo handled the previous year was 75,152 tonnes.
Long-haul routes successfully launched
With four new long-haul routes, the world has come closer to Hamburg. Direct flights are now on offer in every direction. Complementing the daily services to New York/Newark with Continental Airlines and to Toronto with air transat, launched in 2005, Emirates launched a daily service to Dubai on 1 March, 2006, and to New York/JFK on 29 October, 2006. Since the introduction of these long-haul routes there has been a 50 per cent increase in passengers from Hamburg to Toronto and New York and almost 145 per cent growth in passenger numbers to Dubai (comparing January-November 2004 with 2006).
Prognosis for 2007: Hamburg Airport consolidating its growth
Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport, is expecting further positive developments for the airport in 2007: “By breaking the 11 million barrier and reporting record passenger growth, Hamburg Airport has established itself as one of Europe’s major airports. Hamburg is now the number four airport in Germany. The upward trend in passenger figures will continue in the coming year, as Hamburg Airport is an important partner for both airlines and passengers. We will be making every effort this year to consolidate the above-average passenger growth already achieved.”
Hamburg Airport’s passengers benefit from an attractive route network for city trips, longer journeys, seaside holidays and business travel. Lufthansa has already announced plans to add Valencia and Bornholm to its list of destinations served direct from Hamburg, Germanwings will be launching services to Palma de Mallorca, Split and Corfu, and Air Berlin/dba will be introducing a service to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and Rimini
